the 2012 Olympics, by funding a sponsorship package through Aberdeen’s Robert Gordon University Sports Scholar Scheme.

Hannah (19), from Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, is the current European record holder and British champion for the 400m individual medley and the British champion for the 200m breast stroke and 200m individual medley. Earlier this month she won gold in the 400m individual medley at the Barcelona and Canet legs of the Mare Nostrum Tour, breaking a new meeting record in Canet. She also clinched a gold in the 200m individual medley in Barcelona and was placed third in the 200m freestyle at Canet. Hannah also competed in the Beijing Olympics last year where she was placed sixth in the 400m individual medley.

The four-year sponsorship will enable Hannah to continue training for her medal quest at the 2012 Olympics, while studying for a degree in sport and exercise science at the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen as an RGU:SPORT scholar. The sponsorship will also contribute towards Hannah’s travel, accommodation and additional costs when competing in events in the lead-up to the Olympics.

Hannah said: “The sponsorship is a dream come true for me as it enables me to have fantastic training facilities, but remain in Aberdeen City and Shire, which is just a great place to be. Many sports scholars choose to move to America for their training, and I had been made some tempting offers, but I chose Robert Gordon University because I love being at home. The pool is really first class and an ideal environment for training, and it’s so easy to fit in the training schedule with my lectures. The facilities in the region have allowed me to get this far, and with the added support of Aberdeen City and Shire regional identity sponsorship, I hope I can go all the way in my swimming career.”

To coincide with the announcement of the sponsorship package, a poster campaign featuring

an image of Hannah with the slogan ‘Aberdeen City and Shire backing Hannah Miley to 2012’ will be launched so that a high level of regional pride can be built around the rising star.

Emma Watt, brand manager for Aberdeen City and Shire, said that Hannah would be an ideal international ambassador for the region: “We believe it is vitally important to invest in our young talent, and Hannah’ s dedication and positive attitude, not to mention her winning performances, will act as a real inspiration to other youngsters in the area. We also wanted to encourage Hannah in her decision to stay on her home territory – she absolutely loves living in the region, and Robert Gordon University provides the elite training facilities which are already helping Hannah show she is the best swimmer in the country. We hope that the region sends out a really powerful message that if you want to achieve, it is possible in Aberdeen City and Shire”

Hannah will benefit from a package of tailor-made programmes devised to support her needs, sport discipline and academic course requirements within Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire. She will also have access to a private lane in the swimming pool at RGU:SPORT whenever she needs it and a private room close to the pool.

Director of Aberdeen’s RGU:SPORT, Filippo Antoniazzi commented: “I think it’s great that Hannah has not only chosen Robert Gordon University and Aberdeen City and Shire against going to the USA, but also that she has chosen us above some of the bigger sports-focused universities in England. We now have a growing pool of young elite sportsmen and women who are recognising that we have the facilities needed to equip them to compete on a world class stage. Youngsters like Hannah, and Laura Murray, our golfing star, currently ranked number two amateur in Scotland, will only help our growing reputation as one of the premier sports universities in the UK.”

ABERDEEN City and Aberdeenshire has turned its focus on leisure visitors in Norway, with a delegation recently attending the Reiseklar exhibition in Bergen (January 16 to 18) to explore some of the opportunities.

The Aberdeen Airport Business Development Forum has targeted Norway as a prime area for attracting leisure tourism to Aberdeen City and Shire, complementing the region’s strong business travel links.

Wideroe Airlines already operates a route from Aberdeen to Bergen and in January Eastern Airways launched direct flights to Oslo which will operate in addition to its Stavanger route.

Claire Burt, marketing manager for BAA Aberdeen said: “Aberdeen has greater connectivity to Norway than any other destination. Although the business sector is strong, there is clearly ample opportunity to attract more leisure visitors and we have set up a working group to explore and maximise these opportunities.”

Reiseklar attracted more than 150 exhibitors, with around 20,000 visitors to the show. Promoting the region on the Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire stand were representatives from Visit Scotland, BAA Aberdeen, the new Malmaison Hotel and G-Casino, which recently opened its doors in the new City Wharf development. The group

carried out market research during the event, to capture information on the current perception of the region within Norway and to build a profile of potential Norwegian tourists.

Rita Stephen, Aberdeen City and Shire Economic Future (ACSEF) development manager, said: “We are on the brink of a very exciting period for the travel industry within Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire. Not only do we have a whole host of new hotels, golf courses and other attractions coming on stream in the next few years, we will also be able to offer a vastly improved retail experience.

“Added to that, the weak sterling exchange rate will make the region much more appealing to overseas visitors and the tourism industry must capitalise on that opportunity to attract tourists from abroad.”

The Aberdeen Airport Business Development Forum includes representatives from BAA Aberdeen, Visit Scotland, ACSEF, Eastern Airways, the Aberdeen and Grampian Chamber of Commerce, and Aberdeen Hotels Association. The group is currently gathering information on people with an interest in doing business with Norway. For further details contact Claire.burt@baa.com

Aberdeen’s retail sector will be given a further boost this Saturday (August 22) with the opening of three top high street brands in the city’s premier shopping destination.

Topshop and Topman will open for the first time in the Bon Accord Centre while River Island will open bigger premises next door. The new stores further strengthen Aberdeen’s Bon Accord and St Nicholas Centres’ positioning as the top fashion destination for the North and North-east of Scotland.

The interior of the new Aberdeen Topshop and Topman will be based on the recently opened New York store – they are the only Scottish stores to boast this look.

Topshop will stock denim, shoes, lingerie, tall, petite, Kate Moss and a selection of Topshop’s designer collaborations, together with its range of mainline collections.

To mark the opening, Topshop street teams will hand out gift cards in Aberdeen city centre and there will be a competition to win the entire contents of the window display and free sunglasses with every £30 spent. Topman teams will be handing out flyers with unique giftcodes - customers will need to take their unique code to the new Aberdeen store to redeem their gift, where they can receive up to £100 to spend instore.

River Island, which will move from its current unit in Aberdeen’s St Nicholas Centre, will stock the complete selection of its exclusively designed in house range of both men’s and women’s fashion. The brand has a 100 strong design team and each year more than 12,000 pieces of clothing are produced for its 250 stores nationwide.

‘’River Island are very excited about the new store in the Bon Accord Shopping Centre. The store will serve to epitomise the brand’s design ethos and provide a modern and forward thinking environment in which to shop,” said a River Island spokesperson.

These will be the latest in a raft of new store openings in the Bon Accord Centre, Aberdeen – Scotland’s biggest Next recently opened, as have bigger shops for Warehouse, Oasis and Coast, as well as the

only Scottish Karen Millen shop outwith the central belt.

Cheryl Baer, Marketing Manager of the Bon Accord and St Nicholas Centres in Aberdeen, says the new stores further underlines the Centres’ position on the Scottish retail map.

“These are hugely popular brands, essential to any shopping centre, and they will be a great draw for shoppers. They are further building on the strong fashion focus we have, particularly in the Bon Accord Centre which now boasts a number of flagship stores and brands which aren’t available anywhere else in the North and North-east of Scotland,” she said.

“As well as benefiting from a far bigger range of fashion, these new stores are fresh, modern and funky, which will add to the overall shopping experience.

“We are particularly excited that the new Topshop and Topman will be the brand’s first shops in Scotland to have a shop fit based on the New York store as this will give shoppers an exclusive insight into the now famous Broadway store.

“These openings are playing an important part of a bigger picture of change at the Bon Accord and St Nicholas Centres. This area of the Bon Accord Centre, in particular, has a range and depth of fashion which is second to none across the North and North-east of Scotland.”

Emma Watt, Brand Manager for Aberdeen City and Shire, said that the new stores are testimony to the confidence that retailers have in the Centres and the stability of the region.

“The face of Aberdeen’s retail sector is changing and the Bon Accord and St Nicholas Centres are playing a pivotal role in this transformation,” she said.

“Topshop, Topman and River Island are among the best know High Street names and these bigger stores are guaranteed to prove exceptionally popular, ensuring that not only are shoppers staying in Aberdeen but that visitors are now coming to the city, specifically because of the strength of retail offering.”

Aberdeen City and Shire’s economy is anticipating a massive injection of cash, only days after the region celebrated the Scottish Government’s decision to give US tycoon, Donald Trump, the go-ahead to build his £1 billion golf development at Menie in Aberdeenshire.
Aberdeen City and Shire Economic Future (ACSEF) the private public partnership that drives economic development in the region has today revealed that a further £600 million of investment is already planned in retail, leisure and commercial developments with over £1.4 billion in potential developments for Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire.
In addition to Trump International Golf Links Scotland, plans are moving forward for a £115 million golf resort, with a hotel and conference centre and a championship course designed by former open champion Paul Lawrie, at Blairs, while a £40 million development at Ury Estates will be the home of a Jack Nicklaus signature golf course and luxury hotel.
A number of landmark buildings are also in the pipeline. The University of Aberdeen recently unveiled plans for its new £57 million library, whose futuristic design will provide the city with a new iconic building. Peacock Visual Arts is planning a £13 million contemporary arts centre, expected to attract around 200,000 visitors a year, bring around £5 million annually into the local economy and provide a centre of excellence for some of the world's finest contemporary artists to work and exhibit in Scotland.
The University of Aberdeen has also committed to constructing a major sports facility, providing the region with a hub capable of hosting international sporting events, attracting promising athletes to the University, nurturing local talent and giving the local community access to sporting opportunities. Phase one of this development will provide a £28million new sports centre by Autumn 2009.
The proposed new £55 million HQ site for The Wood Group (250,000 sq ft) will form a new city business district, which will help redress the shortage of commercial properties.
The pressure on office space has meant that most of the units in the first phase of a £10 million scheme by Kingseat Business Development

Company are already taken. This will become Aberdeen City and Shire’s latest business park, 11 miles out of Aberdeen city centre, with Stewart Milne’s 125,000 sq ft Union Plaza satisfying some of the city-centre shortage.
Recently dubbed the “city the credit crunch forgot” by the national media, Aberdeen has other city centre developments planned. They include the construction of the £250 million Union Square development, which will open next autumn creating a new retail and leisure quarter for Aberdeen, featuring a 203-bedroom Jury’s Inn hotel and the £2 million facelift of the St Nicholas Centre, due to be ready in Spring 2009.
Scotland’s First Minister recently marked the start of construction of one of the largest city centre developments in Scotland, the £75 million iQ development, a commercial hub incorporating a 164-room Park Inn Hotel and high quality office space.
Another 100- bedroom Ibis Hotel is planned for Aberdeen as the centrepiece of the £30 million City Wharf leisure and entertainment centre near Union Street, due to open in October 2009.
In Aberdeen’s West End, £7 million is being spent refurbishing the former Queens Hotel into a Malmaison, which opens at the end of this year. To the north of the city a new Holiday Inn Express recently opened at Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre with a 222-bed Radisson hotel also planned for the area.
ACSEF development manager, Rita Stephen, said : ”These new developments represent investment totalling over £600 million. When coupled with Trump International Golf Links Scotland and other proposals such as Banchory & Leggart Estates and Energetica – the proposed 30 mile energy lifestyle corridor, the total could be approaching £3 billion.
“This signals a new era for the region that will secure our long-term vision for economic growth, diversifying the economy and enhancing our quality of life.
“Aberdeen City and Shire must now be one of the most interesting and dynamic city regions in the UK with exciting prospects for residents, visitors and those wishing to relocate here.”

Aberdeen, a city in Grays Harbor in Washington is perhaps best known as the hometown of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain and dubbed as the birthplace of grunge music. However, this city is also considered the economic center of Grays Harbor. While its history speaks of logging and fishing industries, it is now being geared to be a tourism and retail hub.

Since the turn of the century, biodiesel plants and harbors have been the main source of industry for locals. Major corporations have turned to these industrial plantations for fresh produce and energy. Hence, there has been a pressing need for sewage cleanup around areas surrounded by water in Aberdeen WA. With all the clutter and waste that come from the ships and the sea, it is imperative for sewers to be cleaned thoroughly in a systematic and efficient way.

What the local government of Aberdeen WA has been doing is strict management of sewage cleanup. The local community needs to be aware of the health hazards and dangers sewage waste can spread around the city. Since sewages are usually underground, rats and different kinds of bacteria linger around the pipes. Another serious threat to the health conditions of the city is chemical and bacterial contamination. These come from various sources. Sometimes, the chemicals used in factories leak into the sewers.

On the other hand, the excess fish from ships may also enter the sewers as well.

The first thing professional sewage cleaners need to do is inspect the scope of the pipe systems underneath the city. When it comes to sewage cleanup in Aberdeen WA, the supervisors handling the cleaning project need to familiarize themselves with the environment. Due to the cold climate and its proximity to the ocean, certain measures need to be taken into consideration. One measure would be ensuring that the cleaning agents used will not contaminate the frigid air or the clean water systems.

Furthermore, another measure would be to use eco-friendly equipment to clean the waste inside the sewers to prevent further damage to the environment. In the world today where climate change and environmental issues are rapidly becoming more and more prevalent, the key to making things better is to tackle everyday issues. This may seem like a trivial activity but in the long run, it makes a big difference.

The economic trend of recent months has corporate executives taking a sharp look at how to cut telecommunications costs.According to the 2008 Aberdeen Report, The State of the Market, a survey of 4,654 respondents found that the danger of a looming recession was among the top three challenges for the coming year. And, with telecom being among the top three corporate expenses, companies are searching for effective ways to reduce telecom costs, as doing so can have a significant positive impact on corporate profitability. Telecom expense management (TEM) software is designed to help achieve this.Particular attention is being paid to reducing the cost of wireless telecommunications. In a February 2008 Aberdeen benchmark report, Execute on Wireless Expense Management to Drive ROI, 75% of respondents stated that their corporate wireless costs had increased over the last two years. In addition, while traditional TEM systems concentrated mainly on the verification and payment of telecom vendors' invoices, current functionality includes such things as wireless expense management (WEM), centralized inventory control and procurement, business analytics and tools for negotiating more favorable contracts with telecom vendors.Aberdeen found that on average telecom costs amount to over 3% of revenues. Best-in-Class enterprises were 60% more likely to have reporting and analysis capabilities. Yet,

despite the importance of telecom expense management, a 2007 report by the same group found that the majority of companies surveyed did not have centralized inventory control and procurement, or other telecom expense reduction strategies in place.Aberdeen believes that corporate pressure to increase profitability will lead to a stronger move towards implementing telecom expense management strategies. These include increased monitoring of telecom expenses, centralized procurement of telecom services and equipment, centralized telecom inventory control, centralized verification and payment of telecom invoices and centralized contract negotiations and dispute resolution. In many cases, new policy will need to be issued and enforced to accomplish these strategies.Under the title, Slashing Telecom Expense Management in a Looming Recession, the Aberdeen Group is initiating a study as to how companies are going about implementing telecom expense management techniques and is inviting corporations to participate in the study, as detailed in their online Research Preview. (1)Telecom expense management is a proven technology for reducing telecom expenses and has provided dramatic costs savings and returns on investment (ROI) to corporations that have implemented TEM systems.Further information about telecom expense management may be obtained from the Telsoft Solutions website at www.telsoft-solutions.com.Reference: (1)http://www.aberdeen.com/summary/report/research_previews/5207-RP-slashing-expense-recession.asp

Aberdeen, in the heart of Scotland’s Grampian Highlands, is an ideal
destination for art, history and culture that is slightly off the
beaten track. Scotland’s third largest city was inspiration for the
well known Scottish folk song The Northern Lights of Old Aberdeen which
portrays a well worn Scottish theme: that of extreme homesickness when
away from my “home native land” and celebrates the spectacular
phenomenon of Aurora Borealis.

Places of interest:

Aberdeen was established in 1179, and her fortunes were transformed by
Robert Bruce’s 1319 Charter, in recognition of his gratitude to the
people of Aberdeen who had sheltered him during his campaign against
the English. Since 1509 when the renowned University of Aberdeen was
established, Aberdeen has been an academic centre of Europe, which
influences a great many of the cultural and historical activities on
offer in the city and its surrounding areas.

Described by Queen Elizabeth II as “my dear place in the Highlands”
Balmoral Castle offers visitors guided tours of the gardens, historical
exhibitions and luxury safari in the Caledonian Pine Forest, where
visitors can catch glimpses of Scottish wildlife.

Another ancestral home continuously inhabited for over 400 years is
Haddo House. Visitors can enjoy Gordon family ancestral portraits,
memorabilia, the old stables and traditional Scottish tea room. Opera,
ballets and plays are presented from May to October.

The NorthEast Falconry Centre offers a uniquely close experience
with Scotland’s birds of prey. Introduction to Falconry, outside
demonstrations and walks with hawks are just some of the exciting and
educational activities on offer.

Aberdeen Art Galleries and Museums comprises Aberdeen Art Gallery,
Aberdeen Maritime Museum, the Lord Provost’s house and The Tollbooth in
one site, and offers a varied programme of events and exhibitions. The
Art Gallery hosts collections dating back to the 18th century of fine
art, and the Maritime museum exults in the region’s proud seafaring
traditions. The Tollbooth is made up of 17th century cells, and the
Lord Provost’s House portrays the elegance and ritual of upper class
Highland living.

Things to do:

Aberdeen offers a whole host of recreational activities to enjoy. From
parks to museums, tourists will never be bored while in Aberdeen.

Storybook Glen in Royal Teeside is a magical adventureland set over
28 acres where kids and adults can see their favourite fairy-tales and
nursery rhymes come to life, and wonder at the natural beauty of
waterfalls, brooks and flora.

The Gordon Highlanders Museum celebrates the history and culture of
over two centuries of one of Scotland’s greatest kilted regiments, the
Gordon Highlanders.

For family entertainment, it is hard to beat Sunset Boulevard, an
indoor entertainment centre that offers bowling, dodgems, games and an
adventureland – perfect for the Scottish weather!

Known as the “jewel in the crown” of the city’s fantastic parks,
The David Welch Winter Gardens boasts a Tropical House featuring flora
from South and Central America, an Acrid House which creates desert
conditions for exotic cacti to flourish, and a Corridor of Perfumes
which celebrates the variety of perfumes from different plant species.

A visit to the Lighthouse and Harbour Master is a don’t-miss to
learn about Scotland’s marine history, and find out what ships will be
arriving in the port and when.

The world’s sixth oldest golf club, The Royal Aberdeen Golf Club
may be able to lay claim to being the site of the invention of the game
of golf. Today the club retains the old world elegance of a gentlemen’s
club, and boasts a healthy membership of both local and overseas golf
enthusiasts who enjoy the stunning Balgowie Course, which has played
host to many major tournaments.

Food & Drink:

There are a number of fine locations to dine at while in Aberdeen. No
matter what a tourist’s preferences are, Aberdeen offers something to
appeal to everyone’s tastes.

The Stage Door Restaurant is the destination for a
step-back-in-time dining experience. Situated in the old Aberdeen Union
