Scotland’s largest Next store opened in Aberdeen last week (August 6), launching a new design concept in the UK for the high street fashion and home chain. This is the latest in a string of new openings for top brand names in the city, demonstrating the strength of Aberdeen’s retail sector as it continues to be more resistant to the effects of the recession.

The flagship store is located on the upper mall of Aberdeen’s Bon Accord Centre, and has almost 30,000 square feet of trading space - three times the size of the combined floor space of the two existing Next shops in Aberdeen’s St Nicholas Centre. The store features new displays, graphics and materials, and is the first UK store to introduce a shoe lounge.

Karen Millen opened its first store out of the central belt in the Aberdeen shopping centre last April, exceeding sales targets in its first week by more than 140%, while Oasis, Warehouse and Coast all beat expected sales targets when they opened enlarged stores in May.

Leading luxury shoe retailer, Kurt Geiger, is set to open its first Scottish boutique outside the central belt at the end of the month, and will be joined by new stores for Topshop, Topman and River Island.

Cheryl Baer, marketing manager of the Bon Accord & St Nicholas Centre in Aberdeen said: “The latest stores to open in Aberdeen’s Bon Accord Centre all delivered very strong performances in their first few weeks of trading, and there has been a fantastic buzz in the centres since these stores opened.

We are in negotiation with a number of stores which are new to the city, and the overall impression they are reporting is that Aberdeen offers a real opportunity.”

Rita Stephen, Development Manager for Aberdeen City and Shire Economic Future (ACSEF), said: “The new stores are a testament to the confidence retailers have in Aberdeen and have given a new impetus to the retail offering in the city. Aberdeen has suffered in the last few years with a lack of choice in the retail sector, particularly in its range of mid to premium high street fashion stores. These investments keep retail expenditure in the city and provide a much needed incentive to local shoppers to avoid travelling elsewhere in search of up to date fashion.”

Due to be completed this Autumn, Hammerson’s £250m Union Square project will provide Scotland's second-largest shopping centre, complete with a multiplex cinema and links to a new transport hub at the nearby Aberdeen railway station and the new bus station.

Of the retailers and eateries signed up to the development this year, 80% of the brands are new to Aberdeen with Bestseller, Apple, Azendi and Yo! Sushi making Union Square only their second retail location in Scotland.

Other retailers opening their first Aberdeen store in Union Square include, Zara, Cult, Mamas & Papas, Cotswold and Instyle Furniture, as well as new restaurants Nando's and ASK.

ABERDEEN City and Aberdeenshire has turned its focus on leisure visitors in Norway, with a delegation recently attending the Reiseklar exhibition in Bergen (January 16 to 18) to explore some of the opportunities.

The Aberdeen Airport Business Development Forum has targeted Norway as a prime area for attracting leisure tourism to Aberdeen City and Shire, complementing the region’s strong business travel links.

Wideroe Airlines already operates a route from Aberdeen to Bergen and in January Eastern Airways launched direct flights to Oslo which will operate in addition to its Stavanger route.

Claire Burt, marketing manager for BAA Aberdeen said: “Aberdeen has greater connectivity to Norway than any other destination. Although the business sector is strong, there is clearly ample opportunity to attract more leisure visitors and we have set up a working group to explore and maximise these opportunities.”

Reiseklar attracted more than 150 exhibitors, with around 20,000 visitors to the show. Promoting the region on the Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire stand were representatives from Visit Scotland, BAA Aberdeen, the new Malmaison Hotel and G-Casino, which recently opened its doors in the new City Wharf development. The group

carried out market research during the event, to capture information on the current perception of the region within Norway and to build a profile of potential Norwegian tourists.

Rita Stephen, Aberdeen City and Shire Economic Future (ACSEF) development manager, said: “We are on the brink of a very exciting period for the travel industry within Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire. Not only do we have a whole host of new hotels, golf courses and other attractions coming on stream in the next few years, we will also be able to offer a vastly improved retail experience.

“Added to that, the weak sterling exchange rate will make the region much more appealing to overseas visitors and the tourism industry must capitalise on that opportunity to attract tourists from abroad.”

The Aberdeen Airport Business Development Forum includes representatives from BAA Aberdeen, Visit Scotland, ACSEF, Eastern Airways, the Aberdeen and Grampian Chamber of Commerce, and Aberdeen Hotels Association. The group is currently gathering information on people with an interest in doing business with Norway. For further details contact Claire.burt@baa.com

aberdeen washington weather

Aberdeen, a city in Grays Harbor in Washington is perhaps best known as the hometown of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain and dubbed as the birthplace of grunge music. However, this city is also considered the economic center of Grays Harbor. While its history speaks of logging and fishing industries, it is now being geared to be a tourism and retail hub.

Since the turn of the century, biodiesel plants and harbors have been the main source of industry for locals. Major corporations have turned to these industrial plantations for fresh produce and energy. Hence, there has been a pressing need for sewage cleanup around areas surrounded by water in Aberdeen WA. With all the clutter and waste that come from the ships and the sea, it is imperative for sewers to be cleaned thoroughly in a systematic and efficient way.

What the local government of Aberdeen WA has been doing is strict management of sewage cleanup. The local community needs to be aware of the health hazards and dangers sewage waste can spread around the city. Since sewages are usually underground, rats and different kinds of bacteria linger around the pipes. Another serious threat to the health conditions of the city is chemical and bacterial contamination. These come from various sources. Sometimes, the chemicals used in factories leak into the sewers.

On the other hand, the excess fish from ships may also enter the sewers as well.

The first thing professional sewage cleaners need to do is inspect the scope of the pipe systems underneath the city. When it comes to sewage cleanup in Aberdeen WA, the supervisors handling the cleaning project need to familiarize themselves with the environment. Due to the cold climate and its proximity to the ocean, certain measures need to be taken into consideration. One measure would be ensuring that the cleaning agents used will not contaminate the frigid air or the clean water systems.

Furthermore, another measure would be to use eco-friendly equipment to clean the waste inside the sewers to prevent further damage to the environment. In the world today where climate change and environmental issues are rapidly becoming more and more prevalent, the key to making things better is to tackle everyday issues. This may seem like a trivial activity but in the long run, it makes a big difference.
